BA Italian and French
Is this
programme for me?
Italian and French are key
languages in Europe today, with an ever-strengthening
role. This degree will give you an intimate first-hand
familiarity with European culture which will put you on
a cosmopolitan 'wavelength' in life, and in your
reading. Exploration of other cultures, past and
present, is an enriching experience, giving historical
perspective and enhanced cultural, social and aesthetic
vision. As you advance towards graduate status you will
acquire the ability to read, speak and write Italian and
French accurately, and with ease.
Programme aims
The BA offers a range of
interrelated options in Italian and French language,
linguistics, literature, society and thought.
You'll gain an outstanding facility in reading,
writing and speaking Italian and French, but also, and
principally, a trained mind. In addition, you'll develop
the confidence which comes with appraising intellectual
issues, articulating your own conclusions by developing
an independent and enterprising spirit.

The programme has been
developed by the Departments of Italian and French at
Royal Holloway, both recognised centres of excellence in
teaching and research in the UK.
The intellectual and personal qualities which
degree-level work in the humanities develops are in
demand in the work place. You can expect to achieve a
broad range of transferable skills, communicative
competence and the ability to discriminate and analyse.
The degree will prepare you for many careers including
the public services, teaching and research, journalism,
media and business.
Flexible study at a
reasonable cost
You
have 3-8 years to complete the BA. The total fee payable
to the University is £2,710. Please note that this
figure does not reflect any annual fee increase and
assumes completion in the minimum study period
permitted. Suitably qualified candidates may apply for
exemption from any of the Foundation units of the BA
Italian and French.

Study support
For the French units of
the programme the Programme Director offers a marking
service for essays at an additional cost. The French
Department also produces a regular newsletter for
External students.
